Stealing from aliens? TikTokers say, just do it.
Teenagers on a thieving spree are snapping up chains of Nike Elite backpacks, scooping up dozens and reselling them for a pretty penny to victims of the new online trend.
A New York City teenager raved about his growing collection of over a dozen Nike backpack-specific chain ties, warning others not to leave their bags around his.
Other TikTok clips show teenage troublemakers bragging about how much they can score in a single day at school — and how much they fetch on the resale market.
Some thieves are defending the trend, saying it can “pay my bills,” while charging a few bucks for a chain to those who have fallen victim to the trend. Others, however, are scoring the links for $40, according to commenters on TikTok.
One creator said others “have taken [it] too far” in a TikTok post featuring store shelves fully stocked with Nike Elite backpacks — all missing the fabric links on the zippers.
The trend, which has been compared to “flag football”, has drawn criticism from both disillusioned teenagers and angry parents whose children have been robbed of their Nike chains at school, calling the fashion “messed up”.
Some schools have even been forced to issue an email warning about the trend, according to users on TikTok, while Nike Elite owners who “hate the trend” have been directed to wear their backpacks on the front rather than the back, tying the ties. so that they are harder to steal or remove altogether.
“My son stole it during football practice and he is upset. I am trying to find them online. I never thought it would be this hard,” one distraught parent wrote in a Reddit thread while inquiring about buying spare chains, calling the fad “weird”.
“I made the school replace my bag,” another user replied.
“My son got hit for them today,” cried one disgruntled parent, explaining that two chains had been stolen from her son’s bag.
“Kids have been targeting him all day, he’s only 11, he won’t be able to bring that backpack to school anymore sadly.”
